The slaughter of Jacarezinho

Barbarism has a colour and a class: the slaughter of Jacarezinho and the timelessness of a repeated tragedy

Yesterday, the Jacarezinho neighbourhood, one of the biggest favelas in Rio de Janeiro, was the stage for the most lethal police operation in the history of the city. In what has been known as "the slaughter of Jacarezinho", 25 people were murdered by police officials, with clear signs of executions reported by locals and Human Rights advocates.

Despite the operation's name, "Exceptis", the events that transpired yesterday sadly represent the norm for those who live in favelas, ever since the abolition of slavery. Black bodies and black lives are treated as disposable by the State in a country built by black hands.

Until when will the genocide continue?
